Their mission is to, “...broaden our community's engagement with art” (Welcome to Art Works Downtown, 2018). To achieve their mission they work to connect artists and the public by providing affordable studio, housing, and exhibit space. They also offer classes, events, exhibit galleries and outreach programs to the public. The Multipurpose Room is also available to be rented out for events. They are open to the public on Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and are located at 1337 4th St, San Rafael, CA 94901.

They have multiple gallery spaces to showcase the work of artists to the community. There are many community artists that are part of Art Works Downtown. They also offer many other activities and events for the community to participate in. There is the Sweet Spirit Ceramics Center that offers ceramic classes to adults and kids lead by Barbara Andino-Stevenson.
